Better Films 27:22

about

CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNING: "Better Films" has disturbing elements, including acts of violence, self-mutilation, torture, animal cruelty/abuse, and emotional/familial abuse. The animal abuse, in particular, is why I never finished and previously published this track.

I love short horror stories, I think even more now that I can't watch certain horror films anymore. First turned onto it by a friend abut a decade ago, I also love "old time radio" programming and would listen and fall asleep daily to '30s-'40s horror stories originally told over radio, now streamed from my laptop and phone. (Side note: isn't technology sometimes wonderful?)

Currently I listen to podcasts where performers retell modern creepypastas, often with hit-or-miss soundtracks and effects. I was inspired to "take a stab at it", to use an approp pun. Dickiepasta is a collection of rough edits of creepypasta stories told by Dickie Snakedick (Walter Campbell) with original muzak accompanying my narration.

These were both recorded in 2020 as I was working on the then-unreleased book on VHS album, 2020 Jazz Punk Greats:

I had planned to record a full album of creepypastas but since abandoned this project; any new "Dickepastas" will be added here for your amusement.

The overall production of "Better Films" is also (to me) worse than "Mr. Widemouth". I was learning to use my new mic, and I obviously did not consider how background noises would differently impact a spoken word story over minimal ambient synth versus my vocals sung over multiple layers of louder sounds. At at one point you can hear traffic, including the BART train from about a mile away, picked up by my mic between my narration.

After re-listening a year later and slightly touching a few parts up, I feel ok releasing this, with my primitive production and edits even adding to the charm and spirit of the story itself. The choice is yours, dear reader, to listen or let it remain on the video shelf. Imagine the snap, crackle, pops! and low volume a product of the medium rather than yours truly.

Musical elements from both of my takes on these creepypastas were eventually adapted and used on the book on VHS songs, "Death on VHS" and "2020.JPG".
