It’s a madhouse, a nation under possession Don’t answer the phone, don’t go in the comment section Voting rights dead & buried, unhinged mobs and politicians Surge in violence, overdoses, suicides, and morticians Beyond the beyond, a country fractionated Hospitals filled with bodies of the unvaccinated Delusional from a death trap of pseudo science and madness Spitting on each other’s graves, I feel nothing but sadness I need some kind of release, some sort of distraction That's bleaker than reality and partisan inaction I’ve got a webcam, a bucket of blood, and some traction Make them stream slowly to really get their reaction Won’t you be, won’t you be in my video nasty Won’t you be, won’t you be in my video nasty

about

Farces of Death is a nostalgic tribute to the oft-problematic "video nasties" (British term) and related films I used to watch and collect in my teens and young adulthood that reflect the social anxieties of those times.

The British Video Recordings Act of 1984 led to a moral panic of obscenity charges against film makers and distributors, as well as public spectacle, with the censoring, banning, and burning of several VHS films.

"In all, 72 films – mostly horror titles – were proscribed on the Video Nasties list, although only 39 were ever successfully prosecuted." (lwlies.com)

Similarly, a panic consumed in the U.S. over "filthy" and "obscene" music and film, culminating in a "satanic panic" with unfounded claims of ritual child abuse and occult practices in schools and day cares.

This led to an inevitable demand for, and cashing in on, these "nasty" aesthetics. Many of us can't help but want to watch what the devil does. Meanwhile, the real devils of society can remain hidden in plain sight.
